“Spanish Fountain” Watercolor

An Insight That Can Transform How You Paint
Zing – in an instant my brain lit up and how I saw everything changed. Artists live for moments like these.
It happened on a rainy roadtrip to San Francisco in March where I got a rare chance to learn from the Mozart of Watercolor, John Singer Sargent. The Legion of Honor was showing 31 of his watercolors (plus oils and drawings) from his travels through Spain – a country I had seen and painted five months earlier.
My game plan was simple: spend half an hour studying each and every watercolor for a total of 15+ hours at the exhibit in three days. I hoped with this display of commitment and patience, the painting Gods might be inclined to reward me with a revelation or two.
Theatrical as it sounds, it happened. Exactly halfway through the second day, a key insight that laid hidden suddenly and clearly revealed itself. From that moment forward, I saw Sargent’s paintings (and everything else) in a new way.
The next morning, I got up before the sun to try out this new insight at an easel I brought. It worked and I was stoked. I knew this way of seeing and painting would have a measurable impact on my art.
By the end, I had written over 10 full pages of notes and had taken over 1,000 photos. Like a fisherman who landed a very big catch, I headed home happy.
I now would like to share this insight with you in an online watercolor class.
Together, we will learn:
A different way to see that reveals this insight in any subject matter
A different way to paint in watercolor to fully express this insight
How refinements in seeing and technique can add more joy to the act of painting
We are going to explore some of Sargent’s finest watercolors, experiment with different methods, and then apply the lesson to paint a beautiful watercolor. Throughout, we are going to have a lot of fun. All skill levels are welcome.
You have three ways to learn and enjoy (see below). I hope you will join me.
All the best,
Richard
