Suggested Materials List

You are welcome to use any drawing tools, painting tools, and paper you like. That said, for those interested, here is a listing of the gear that I will be using ...

Pencil & Eraser

• 0.7mm Mechanical Pencil (any brand) with HB or B refills

• Kneaded eraser - any brand is fine

Watercolor Paper

• Saunders Waterford Watercolor Block / 16” x 12” (or any size you prefer) / Rough Surface / Regular White Color / 300gm (140lb)

• Other good brands are Arches, Kilimanjaro, and Fabriano / any size preferred / Rough or Cold-Press Surface / 300gm (140lb)

• My suggestion is to stay away from inexpensive brands or any student-grade paper

Brushes

• Any brushes you enjoy painting with, from flat brushes to round brushes, are fine to use in this class

• I'll be using round brushes of various sizes: #10, 8, 6, and 4

• You may also want to have a liner OR rigger OR small brush (for adding details) / you will be able to find these brushes at your local art supply store or online

Watercolor Palette

• The Portable Painter Palette is excellent and inexpensive / available online at portablepainter.com / I recommend the “Classic Plus Kit” (that has extra wells for additional paint colors, if desired) / scroll down to bottom of this page and click “Gear & Materials” and then “Palette” to learn how to save money on this palette

Watercolor Paints

You are welcome to use any colors and brands you like. Here are the colors and brands I use for pen and wash sketching (tube colors or pan colors are fine):

• Cadmium Yellow Lemon – Schmincke Horadam Aquarell

• Cadmium Yellow Deep – MaimeriBlu

• Quinacridone Gold – Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour

• Cadmium Orange – MaimeriBlu

• Transparent Brown – Sennelier L’Aquarelle

• Cadmium Scarlet – Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour

• Permanent Rose – Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour

• Violet – I like to make my own violet by mixing together Permanent Rose – Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour and Cobalt Blue - Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolor

• Utramarine Light – Sennelier L’Aquarelle

• Cobalt Blue – Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour

• Cerulean Blue – Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour

• Viridian – MaimeriBlu

• Winsor Green (Yellow Shade) – Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour

• Titanium Opaque White – Schmincke Horadam Aquarell

I purchase all of my watercolors from Jackson’s Art Supply.

Other Items

• Small spray bottle

• Sponge or Sham-Wow

• Paper towels

• Artist tape

• Water container (to dip brushes in and clean brushes while you paint) – if you buy the Portable Painter Palette, you won’t need a separate water container

• Hair dryer (to speed up the drying time)
